LONDON, Ont. (February 9, 2010) - St. Lawrence College (SLC) Brockville Campus (Schooners) came within just a couple of points of sending two athletes to the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton championships.

Mixed-doubles team, #Amy Vandertoorn# and #Matt Fabiilli#, represented SLC at the Eastern Regional competition which was held over the weekend at College Boreal.

The team of Vandertoorn and Fabiilli battled hard throughout the two-day tournament and a berth to the OCAA Championships came down to their final match.

Vandertoorn and Fabiilli met with strong competition in the round robin. With wins against Boreal, Centennial and Fleming they were looking strong going into their last games.

With a record of 3-2, the pair went up against a very tough Cambrian team in their final match to see who would advance to the championships.

The two teams battled closely with two of the sets needing tie-breakers and no more than two points deciding each game.

However it was not to be for the Schooners as they fell to Cambrian missing out on the championships.
Rookies to the sport, #Jeremie Mboma# and #Willie Primeau# competed in the men's doubles category, putting up a valiant effort in their first experience at a Regional championship.

The duo improved as the tournament progressed but they too were eliminated after5 games and unable to secure slots on the Eastern Regional Championship team.

The East Region has been recognized as being one of the strongest regions and is the strongest it has been in the past few years. High expectations have been setfor the region to capture numerous medals at this year's OCAA Championships in March.
