KINGSTON, Ont. (February 8, 2010) - St. Lawrence College Athletics is proud to announce that they have recently contributed to the 'Help Haiti Relief' with a donation of over $2700 dollars.
Prior to January 16th basketball games, Tri-Campus Athletic Director Brad Greenwood initiated a friendly challenge to the St. Lawrence College community in an effort to bolster fundraising efforts to Help Haiti.
The challenge was to match the combined score of the men's and women's basketball team's scores with a cash donation.
In the basketball games, both winning efforts by the Vikings, the men's team scored 93 points while the women scored 64 in their victories for a total of 157 points. Athletics staff provided the initial $157.00 in the challenge and other groups from the Kingston campus followed suit to match.
In addition to the challenge fans at the January 16th games also contributed by donating a total of $215. Building on this success the Athletic Department continued their donation request at the following home game on January 30th were the fans contributed another $210.
If that was not enough the Athletic Department's gym supervisors took it upon themselves to raise the bar even further by organizing a bottle drive and a Shoot-A-Thon which was held at the Kingston Campus Gymnasium.
The Shoot-A-Thon was a student based challenge where “shooters” would gather sponsors from friends, family, and other students to sponsor them in their efforts to shoot 100 free throws. The students were either sponsored per shot, or given a maximum dollar amount. The total donation from the Shoot-A-Thon was an amazing $1100 dollars!
“I am very proud of our staff and applaud their efforts in helping with the devastating situation in Haiti.” stated Tri-Campus Athletic Director Brad Greenwood.”All of our staff -full-time, part-time and student employees – did an amazing job and their efforts exemplify their sense of community and willingness to lend a hand.”
