PETERBOROUGH, Ont. (March 9, 2010) - Displaying strong defensive play and solid net minding at the East Regional Tournament, the St. Lawrence College (SLC) Cornwall Sharks women's indoor soccer team (2-1) advanced to the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial championships.
#Alia Whittingham# of Ottawa and #Chantal Seguin# of Cornwall, Ont., each recorded a shutout against inner-campus rivals SLC Kingston and SLC Brockville helping the Sharks earn their first provincial berth since 2005.
Whittingham opened the tournament in goal for the Sharks against the Kingston Campus (Vikings). After a scoreless first half, Whittingham received assistance seconds into the second half when #Ashley Belmore# of Cornwall, Ont., split two defenders and scored, breaking the deadlock.
Following the goal from Belmore, the Sharks turned their attention to the Vikings strong offense and began to shut them down.
"We knew going into the game we had to control their top two scorers," stated Head Coach Bill Atwell. "We kept the pressure on their defence which gave us better scoring chances."
The strategy paid off as Belmore's goal held up giving the Sharks an important 1-0 victory.
In their second game the Sharks were up against the host Fleming College, who quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes.
Cornwall battled hard throughout having great scoring opportunities, but they were unable to crack the Fleming goalkeeper. Fleming added a late goal to put the game out of reach, taking it by a final of 2-0.
Heading into their final game on Saturday with a record of 1-1, and the fact that the Kingston campus had defeated Brockville the day before, the Sharks controlled their fate, win and they were in.
Turning to Seguin for the final game in net, the Sharks met their other inner-campus opponents the Brockville Campus (Schooners).
#Kayla Laframboise# of Cornwall, Ont., opened the scoring for the Sharks in the first with a bullet shot. The Sharks used that momentum to limit the Schooners scoring chances in the second and were able to successfully fend them off for the 1-0 victory to advance to the OCAA Championship Tournament.
"The final game showed us our strengths of defending a lead," continued Head Coach Atwell. “We established ball control which created a number of good chances, and puts us in a good position at the championships."
The Sharks, along with Fleming College, advanced to the 2010 OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships March 25-26 at the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA) Centre in Vaughn, Ont.
