BROCKVILLE, Ont., (March 31, 2010) - Wednesday evening marked the 36th Annual St. Lawrence College (SLC) Brockville Campus Athletic Awards. For the first time in 36 years the banquet was celebrated off-campus at local hotel, The Royal Brock where Corey Sewell and Amber Windsor captured top honours as the Brockville Rotary Club Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Brockville men's extramural hockey team captain Corey Sewell, was a true leader for the Riverdogs. Always leading practice drills and supporting his team at exhibition games and tournaments, Sewell finished the season as the team's top goal scorer. Sewell's most notable goal of the season came at the Sheridan Invitational against Seneca College where Sewell scored the winning goal with 7.3 seconds left in game to advance the Riverdogs on to the consolation finals. Sewell has been a strong supporter of athletics at SLC and excelled in his Pre-Service Firefighting course with a GPA of 2.9.

Amber Windsor was praised as being an athletic leader, both on and off of the field. As a top player on the women's indoor soccer team, Windsor excelled at her sport, playing strong defensively, cheering on teammates and always putting 100% into her performance. In her role as athletics assistant Amber promotes athletics, volunteering for all SLC host tournaments and events. Windsor also took great initiative this year by hosting a Heart & Stroke Foundation dodgeball tournament, raising over $560 for the cause. Throughout it all Amber has maintained a high academic standing in her first year of Police Foundations with a 3.69 GP and was also awarded an Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) Academic Athletic Achievement Award.

The evening began with an upbeat slideshow featuring of the year's celebration of accomplishments and personal memories of the athletes. Following a welcome from Athletic & Student Life Officer Janelle MacPherson-Kenney and Tri-Campus Athletic Director Brad Greenwood, the crowd was treated to some words of wisdom from special guest speaker Dennis Maruk, former NHL Washington Capitals player.

Maruk spoke to the students about the trials and tribulations involved in following the dream of becoming a professional athlete and how despite many obstacles and nay-sayers his determination, talent and dedication prevailed. Fresh off of a trip to Afghanistan to visit the troops, Maruk spoke of his experiences and life after the NHL.

Coaches from each of the varsity and extramural teams entertained the crowd with stories of persistence and triumph from their respective seasons as they awarded their teams with the Most Improved Athlete, Most Valuable Athlete and Coach's Recognition awards.

Other major awards distributed included the Athletic and Academic Achievement award, received by David Reddom of both the men's indoor soccer and extramural hockey teams. Reddom was a leader on both teams while maintaining a GPA of 3.8.

Willy Primeau was selected as the SLC Athletics Contribution award which is presented to the athlete who has displayed a positive attitude, commitment and enthusiasm for sport and has willingly devoted his time towards furthering athletics.

Primeau showed great commitment and enthusiasm for the sports he both plays and supports. Aiding in marketing efforts by wearing sandwich boards around the school, recruiting players for every team, trying his hand at every sport that is offered and always being an extra set of hands in athletics.

Former Athletic Director Tyler Forkes still shows his support for SLC athletics by sponsoring the Tyler Forkes Fair Play Award. Well deserving recipient Scott Urquhart was described as “embodying fair play in sport both on and off the ice, always showing players, coaches and referees the utmost respect.”

As a member of the college for over 35 years, veteran and avidly enthusiastic supporter of athletics, former Athletic Director Al Hoy was the recipient of the Intramural Staff Athlete of the Year award.

Student athletes undergo a great deal of pressure throughout the season to perform both on the field/court/course/ice and in the classroom. To recognize these efforts, the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) awards those varsity athletes that have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout the season with an All-Academic award. The following students were the lucky recipients of this award:
