Cornwall (July 30, 2010) – St. Lawrence College (SLC) Cornwall is pleased to announce the expansion of its women's varsity indoor soccer program to include an exhibition outdoor season this coming fall. This marks the first time in the history of Sharks athletics that a women's outdoor soccer team will be included in the fall sport line-up.

Under the guidance of Coach Bill Atwell, the Lady Sharks enjoyed one of their most successful athletic seasons last year. The Sharks finished second at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) East Regional's tournament held at Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario. This finish advanced the Sharks to the OCAA Championships for the first time in over five years.

Building on the success of last year's indoor season, the women's soccer program will continue to gain momentum as the team gets ready to face strong competition during their inaugural outdoor season. Prior to entering OCAA league play, new teams must first undergo a trial outdoor schedule. The Sharks line-up includes matches against inter-campus rivals, the Kingston SLC Vikings along with NCAA member colleges from New York State.

Coach Atwell is looking forward to utilizing the player's outdoor skill set this upcoming season. “With the success we had last year, the team and I are looking forward to showing their talent on the big stage of the outdoor game against some top Canadian and American Colleges and Universities”.

Athletics & Student Life Officer for the Cornwall campus, Jacquie Esplen, is pleased with the progression of the women's soccer program. “The transition to an outdoor season is definitely a step in the right direction for the women's varsity soccer program and SLC Athletics. The Athletics Department fully supports Coach Atwell's mission of building a top ranked OCAA outdoor team. Based on the solid foundation Bill developed last season, the timing is right to begin this process and I am looking forward to watching the program continue to grow.”
